The Pet Parent’s Guide to Moving

Spring and summer are peak moving seasons. The boxes are stacked, belongings are packed, and cars and moving vans come and go. With a new home and neighborhood just around the corner, it’s a time of big change for everyone! While the hustle and bustle can feel overwhelming and stressful for you, it can be just as tough on our four-legged friends, so it’s essential to consider them in your moving plans.

This guide will help ensure that your pet’s transition from home to home is smooth, stress-free, and paw-sitively seamless.

Prepare a Pet Travel Kit:

Make sure your furry friend has everything they need, on hand, so their needs are met during the move. Create a travel kit that includes food, water, a water bowl, medication, poop bags, a leash/harness, ID tag, and comfort items like a blanket, bedding, or toy.

Keep Their Routine Consistent:

Keeping your pet's meals, bathroom breaks, exercise time, and rest on a consistent schedule can help reduce stress and maintain the sense of routine they're used to.

Secure a Safe Travel Setup:

Have your pet's familiar crate, carrier, or harness accessible and close by, along with water, food, and a favorite toy to help them stay calm and comfortable during the trip.

Introduce Them Gradually:

Give your pet time to explore, sniff, and wander through their new home and/or backyard. Maintain a calm and quiet environment to reduce stress and encourage curiosity.

Update Their Pet Identification Tag:

A new home means a new address, for both you and your pet! Use Quick-Tag ID to update their ID tag with your new information, including your address and any new phone numbers, so they stay safe. A tag is a ticket home!

Remember that moving can be just as overwhelming for pets as it is for people. With a brand new environment, unfamiliar sights, sounds, and a change in their comfort zone, it’s important to give your pet time to adjust. Be sure to paws for extra cuddles, check in often, and offer comfort as they settle into their new space. A little love and minimal disruption go a long way in helping them feel at home.
