How to Keep Your Pet Safe During Busy Holiday Gatherings

Between the doorbell ringing, guests arriving, and delicious food on the table, the holidays can be stressful for our four-legged friends! Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the easiest times for pets to slip out the door or get overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle.

Here’s how to make sure your pet stays safe, calm, and right where they belong, at home with you for the holidays:

Update Their ID Tag

Before the holiday rush kicks in, take a look at your pet’s tag. Is your phone number still current? Has your address changed? If it’s outdated, refresh their tag with accurate information. It’s their ticket home in case they slip out during the holiday chaos. (Pro tip: A new tag makes for a great stocking stuffer!)

Manage the Front Door

Holiday guests mean doors are frequently opening. Create a ‘safe zone’ for your pet in a separate room that includes their bed, blanket, water, and a fun toy where they can stay comfortable until everyone’s settled. If they love to greet your house guests, make sure their collar and tag is on so they can stay safe and close to home as people come and go.

Keep Calm During Commotion

Loud noises such as laughter, clinking dishes, and footsteps throughout the house can stress out your pet. Play soft music or use a white noise machine in their cozy safe zone to keep them calm.

Watch the Holiday Menu

We know it’s tempting to share, but turkey bones, chocolate, onions, and rich foods can make pets sick. Make sure your guests know not to sneak treats under the table (or ask first if they would like to share a nibble). Have a pet-safe snack on hand so your furry friend can feel included.

Plan For Travel

If you’re taking your pet along to holiday gatherings, pack their essentials: food, toys, leash, waste bags, water bowl, and ID tag. For long drives, make sure their collar fits snug, but not too tight, and they’re cozy with blankets and comfort items.

Now that your pet is safe and secure this holiday season, you can be the best host! With no door dashes, no lost pets, and just good company and happy paws.
