Indoor or Outdoor? The Best Lifestyle for Your Cat

Did you know that indoor cats live, on average, 10 years longer than outdoor cats? While keeping your cat indoors has its benefits, that doesn't mean it's the only lifestyle for your curious feline. Trying to decide if your cat should be fully indoors, outdoors, or hybrid? Take a look through our pros, cons, and safety tips (along with fun enrichment ideas) so you can make sure they enjoy the lifestyle that best fits yours.

Indoor Cats: Cozy but Stimulated

Pros: Indoor cats have a longer life expectancy with a lower risk of disease, parasites, and accidents. Their routine is more predictable, so you know where they are and what to expect throughout their day.

Cons: Being inside all day without external enrichment can lead to a higher risk of boredom and obesity, and the development of behavioral issues if under-stimulated.

Safety Tips:

  1. Make sure your cat has an updated ID tag and collar. Even indoor cats can slip out unexpectedly and may get lost quickly.
  2. Microchipping serves as a backup ID in case their collar comes off or gets caught on sticks or brush.
  3. Check to ensure all home cords, plants, and breakables are out of their reach to prevent them from accidentally (or intentionally) biting, eating, or playing with dangerous objects.

Enrichment Ideas: Give your cat a front-row seat to the outside world with a window perch or bird-watching station. Do fun, interactive play sessions with toys and make sure they have a cat tree or climbing shelves to peek outside and explore when curiosity hits.

Outdoor Cats: Freedom with Risk

Pros: Outdoor cat's get to follow their natural curiosity and hunting and exploring instincts, keeping them active, entertained, and less likely to develop boredom-related behaviors.

Cons: Life outside comes with risks like predators, traffic, and disease which can shorten their lifespan. Outdoor cats are more likely to get lost and need extra vet care.

Safety Tips:

  1. Reflective collars: In addition to an updated pet ID tag so they can always find their way back home, use a reflective breakaway collar for additional visual safety.
  2. Do regular parasite prevention for fleas, ticks, and worms.

Enrichment Ideas: Spend time outside with your cat and keep an eye on their adventures. See where they explore and what catches their attention. Set up a regular feeding and check-in schedule to give structure to their outdoor routine.

Hybrid Indoor and Outdoor: The Best of Both Worlds

Pros: A hybrid indoor/outdoor lifestyle lets your cat enjoy outdoor physical and mental stimulation with fewer risks than living fully outside.

Cons: Cats with a hybrid routine require more involvement, supervision, and hands-on care.

Safety Tips:

  1. Do harness training for leashed walks.
  2. Create a “catio” or screened-in porch for fresh air without danger.
  3. Update their ID tags and make sure they’re microchipped.

Enrichment Ideas: Rotate their outdoor toys and scents to keep their environments interesting. Create a bonding moment outside with play or training, then bring it inside with cuddles.

The best lifestyle for your cat depends on your lifestyle (living environment and time for supervision) along with their personality. After you bring them home, give them time to adjust. You'll learn more about their personality and what works best for you! No matter the lifestyle you choose, proper identification with an updated ID tag is your cat’s ticket home, every time!
